Ring Alarm Stronger Contact Magnet
Jon Fineman's Place resume blog
Another quick fun post. Especially since Rare-earth minerals are in the news.
For security conscious folks who have a stack of PC disk drives in boxes trying to figure out how to dispose of them or what you can do with them. Here is an idea.
I take the disk drives apart for fun. You need a few different size torx drivers and maybe a pliers and screw driver. It is a good stress reliever. I should make a post about disassembly of disk drives.
Anyway each one comes with a very powerful magnet. I have a bunch laying around, well sticking actually. Other than being great at holding up a massive amount of papers to your refrigerator I really haven't had a use for them.
Well now I have put another two of my magnets to use (other than holding up paper)!
With doors and windows this usually isn't a problem. But for garage doors that wiggle, finding a place for your contact and magnet can be challenging.
When I placed the sensor above the door it hit it. Mounting the magnet and sensor on the side of the door worked, but the magnet was a little further than what Ring specified. The magnet that comes with the sensor was adaquate but I wanted to make sure I didn't have any false alarms.
Their suggestion if the magnet can't be mounted within a half inch is to get a larger magnet. Ok, but they don't sell one.
I wanted a nice strong magnet that would ensure contact. Enter disk drive magnets!
